Dr Mothersille partnered with Ingerop South Africa’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr Duane Booyse, to deliver a presentation on the Raising of Hazelmere Dam to the ICOLD Young Professionals Forum (ICOLD -YPF) in conjunction with the SANCOLD YPF.
Hazelmere Dam is located on the Mdloti River in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Constructed in 1976 to supply irrigation and domestic water, it remains a key regional water supply asset. For the North Coast Region of KwaZulu-Natal. The dam was successfully raised by 7m, which effectively doubled its capacity to 43.6 million m3. Ultra-high-capacity rock anchors were an integral part of the dam strengthening system, which involved initiating a significant sacrificial trial anchor programme and installing hydraulic pressure transducer load cells to enable remote monitoring of anchor loads throughout the structure’s service life. In addition, the special data analysis, storage, and management software package, AnchorTest®, was used throughout the mandatory testing phases to provide real-time feedback on anchor performance.
